Fraxel® is a non invasive laser therapy that can address concerns of aging, skin rejuvenation, scars and discoloration by skin resurfacing. To understand Fraxel® further, let’s understand basic anatomy of the skin.
The skin has two layers, the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and the dermis is the deeper layer of the skin that contains a network of proteins, specifically, collagen and elastin. As you age and get more sun exposure, collagen and elastin break down faster than your body can rebuild them. As a result, your skin may start to sag and show damage like wrinkles, lines or spots.

Fraxel® uses microscopic laser columns to penetrate deep into the dermis to create tiny wounds, which trigger your body’s natural response system to heal those wounds. This process expedites your body’s remodeling of collagen and elastin, which results in tighter, fresher, more youthful-looking skin. This is how Fraxel® treatment creates new skin from the inside out. Since it takes weeks for the healing process to take place, results are not seen immediately after each Fraxel® treatment, but are noticeable after 4-6 weeks and results continue up to 6 months after each individual session.

Just as important are the areas of skin that Fraxel® treatment doesn’t touch. Because the treatment is so precise, the laser columns target only a fraction of skin at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This “fractional” treatment allows your body to heal the skin faster than if the entire area were treated at once. Most of our patients recover in only a few days and are able to resume regular activities with little down time. The device encompasses the scientific principle that fat cells are very susceptible to permanent damage under controlled low temperatures.  Using this principal of“cryolipolysis,” a cold enough temperature is reached during treatment to selectively target fat cells without harming skin or soft tissue.  The targeted area of fat is placed into an apparatus with cooling plates that initiate the process.  A complete treatment cycle (per area/per side) is one hour.  Common treatment areas include “love handles,” upper and lower abdomen sections and upper back fat.  The cells later become crystalized and undergo apoptosis or natural cell death. This process takes place over several months and results are seen between two to four months after treatment.  Potential side effects from treatment include temporary bruising, numbness/dulling of sensation within treatment site, redness of skin, cramping, and tenderness/pain.
